My annotated bibliography - some thoughts

Essay Title: Discuss the Ways in which the Illustrations within Children's Picture Books have been used as Ideological Tools.

What kind of sources have I used?

I have tried to look for books, journals and articles that analyze children’s picture books. I began to find a thread between authors who seem to be quoting each other as this is not a very broadly studied topic. My way of dealing with this was to try and find content that spanned the globe and also looked at various periods in children’s literature.

In addition to secondary sources what are my inspirational sources?

The picture books themselves have been inspirational sources. Though I have chosen to leave these names out of my annotated bibliography as I wanted to look predominantly at texts that analyzed picture books.

I have also found Bell Hooks and Perry Nodelman extremely intersting as someone who works with children and their insights have been helpful beyond just researching ideology in picture books.

What are the most challenging aspects of bibliographic research?

I had to sift through a lot of irrelevant material at first. This is because I was really trying to focus on the ideology that is presented in picture books. I had to read a lot about children's literature that had to do with text before even finding sources that analyzed picture books.

What are my goals in writing an essay for this module?

I would like to make an insightful and in depth analysis of the chosen topic. It seems that there is a limited amount of work written on this subject and I would like to thoroughly analyse the material I have found in a way that throws new light on the topic.

How tutor and peer feedback have supported my bibliographic research?

Unfortunately I have been lagging behind my class, as other work and commitments have allowed me little time to engage online. I have however downloaded and bought most of the books that I have cited and these are all being read in great detail. This has allowed me to be very detailed in my note taking and this made writing my annotated bibliography slightly easier.
